Strawberry Margarita Cocktail Recipe

July 11, 2022By 0

This Strawberry Margarita Cocktail is a delicious, sweet and fruity spin on the classic Margarita. In this recipe I used homemade strawberry syrup, but you can use a store bought one, or just crushed strawberries mixed with a little sugar to taste.

What is a classic Margarita Cocktail?

A classic Margarita cocktail is in essence, a tequila sour. It usually contains tequila, lime juice and orange liqueur and typically served with a salt rim.

“Another popular variation is the Tommy’s Margarita, which a growing number of bartenders profess is the best version of the drink. Julio Bermejo, the owner of the legendary Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco, is the expert behind this modern classic, which swaps in agave nectar to replace the standard orange liqueur.”

So how do I make this Strawberry Margarita Cocktail from scratch?

This recipe is so simple! Just take all the ingredients and place into a cocktail shaker along with a generous handful of ice. Shake the cocktail vigorously for 20-30 seconds until the cocktail has completely chilled. Carefully strain into a margarita glass and garnish with a strawberry. You can also add a salt or sugar rim before pouring if you prefer.

How do I make a strawberry syrup?

In a saucepan, add equal quantities of strawberries, sugar and water. Bring to a boil for 5-10 minutes until the strawberries are completely soft. Blend together until smooth and strain through a fine mesh sieve. Allow to cool fully before using in a cocktail.

Alternatively, you can mash together a handful of cut strawberries with a teaspoon or two of sugar to taste. This can then be added straight into the cocktail shaker, just make sure you don’t skip the straining step. If neither of these options appeal to you, you can buy in a premade syrup like this one from Monin, this one by Drink Botanicals, this strawberry cocktail mixer by Master of Mixes or something similar.

What kind of tequila should I use for this Strawberry Margarita?

Tequila Blanco is the usual choice for margarita cocktails. This is a clear tequila which has a short ageing time. It is the sweetest type of tequila with a strong agave flavour. Some affordable options that have great flavour are; 1800 Silver Tequila, Espolon Tequila Blanco, El Jimador Blanco, Jose Ceurvo Especial Silver, Olmeca Altos Plata Blanco. I have also heard great things about Dwayne Johnson’s tequila, Teremana Tequila , however as it is not widely available in shops here in Ireland, it is working out very expensive to try. If you live somewhere where it’s not 100 euro a bottle, definitely give it a go!
