This Viral TikTok Yogurt Custard Toast has taken TikTok by storm, with thousands of creators making it with their own spin. With the rise of nutritious sweet breakfasts in the last few years (think baked oatmeal) it’s no wonder this has been an absolute hit. Yogurt Custard Toast is made with simple ingredients that most people have on hand; bread, egg, yogurt and honey (optional). These recipe toe the line between breakfast and desserts and I am here for it. The combination between the crunchy toast, smooth, slightly sweet custard and the almost caramelised top is very addictive.
I tried out a bunch different ways to make this viral TikTok Yogurt Custard Toast and below are my top 5 choices along with the base recipe that you can customise however you like!
To make this viral recipe, begin by adding 1 egg, 2 tbsp Greek yogurt (as thick as possible), 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or paste and 1-2 tbsp honey (to taste) to a small bowl. Carefully mix everything together with a spoon or fork until everything has combined and the mix is mostly smooth. Place two slices of bread onto a lined flat baking tray. Using a spoon, press down and create indents in the middle of the bread without breaking through the bread. Carefully pour the custard mix into the indents equally on each piece of bread. Bake at 180°c for 15 minutes until lightly golden brown around the edges, the bread has toasted and the custard has risen slightly and become dry to the touch.
This is a delicious combo with sweet, creamy white chocolate contrasting against the slightly sour berries. Follow the previous steps to make a plain Yogurt Custard Toast Before baking, sprinkle a few white chocolate chips or chopped white chocolate on top. Add some mixed berries (fresh or frozen) and bake as directed. Dust with icing sugar to serve.

A delicious variation, the caramelised sugar created a crisp shell reminiscent of a creme brulee. Follow all the steps to make a plain Custard Yogurt Toast. Once baked, sprinkle with caster sugar and use a blow torch or grill to caramelise the sugar on top.

This variation is super tasty. With hints of cinnamon, brown sugar and lots of chopped pecans, it is heavily inspired by a traditional pecan pie. To make this version, add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the custard mix. Spread evenly over the bread and sprinkle over a few teaspoons of brown sugar and chopped pecans. Bake as directed.

This version uses stewed rhubarb and the sour notes against the smooth, creamy yogurt custard is super comforting. It’s similar to stewed rhubarb and custard only in toast form. Make a plain yogurt custard toast and before baking, add a tablespoon or two of stewed rhubarb to each slice. Gently swirl through the custard using the handle of a spoon or knife. Bake as directed.

This variation has a strong spring/summery flavour with pops of fresh blueberry and fragrant lemon zest. To make this, add some lemon zest to the custard mix. Divide evenly between the two slices of bread and top with blueberries (fresh or frozen) before baking. Once baked, drizzle honey on top to serve.

I tried out the Yogurt Custard Toast on a bunch of different breads and I found that sliced pan bread worked out best. White, brown and wholemeal all worked equally well. Sourdough or bread with lots of holes in it can be used, but if using these, I would advise you to use bread that is a few days older or the custard tends to just soak into the bread. Sliced brioche bread would also be delicious.
You can use any type of yogurt for this (Greek, Natural, Coconut, Dairy Free etc.) however I would recommend to use the thickest yogurt you can get your hands on. The thicker it is, the more separate the toast and custard layers are after baking. If you use a runny yogurt, it tends to soak into the bread and create a more french toast texture.
Absolutely! There are millions of variations for toppings. Fresh fruit cut into small pieces, chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, jams, stewed fruits, caramel, nuts, nut butters etc. would all work really well on this.
I use an oven to bake mine, set at 180°c for 12-15 minutes. You can also use an airfryer set at 180°c for 10 minutes.
