Small Batch Apple Crumble Recipe

This Small Batch Apple Crumble is an incredibly easy crumble recipe. It contains only a few ingredients and is a small batch recipe! It makes enough to serve 2-3 people, making it a perfect size if you don’t have an abundance of fruit.  The sweet yet tart apples compliment the cinnamon and the crumble topping is crispy and buttery. Here in Ireland, this recipe is an absolute classic dessert that is typically served warm with custard sauce or ice cream.

So how do I make this Small Batch Apple Crumble from scratch?

This recipe is incredibly simple and comes together in minutes, the longest active part is probably peeling and chopping the apples!

To begin, place the peeled and chopped apples into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle over the caster sugar and cinnamon and toss to coat the apples. Taste to make sure you have enough sugar, some apples can be overly sour and need a bit more sugar. Transfer into a small, deep baking dish.

To make the crumble topping, add the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon to a small mixing bowl. Mix together briefly. For the next step, pour in the melted butter and mix everything together until it resembles chunky breadcrumbs. Add in the oats and chopped nuts and mix. Cover the apples with the crumble mix and bake in a hot oven for 30-45 minutes. To tell if the crumble is cooked, it will have turned an even golden brown colour and the apples are bubbling up at the sides. You can also pierce the apples gently with a sharp knife, if they are soft and give way easily, they are cooked.

Allow the crumble to cool slightly, but serve it warm if possible. Cooled leftovers can be transferred to an airtight container and placed into the fridge for up to 3 days. Any leftovers can be reheated in the microwave for 20-30 seconds before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I serve this apple crumble with?

My favourite way to serve this is warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. You can also serve it with a thin custard or caramel sauce.

Can I make this gluten free?

To make the crumble gluten free, you can ground almonds as the base instead of plain flour. If you would like to keep it nut free, you can switch it up and use gluten free oat flour.

Can I make this vegan?

Yes, very easily! You can replace the butter with either plant based margarine or a plant based butter spread.

What type of apples should I use for an apple crumble?

Any kind of apple can be used for this recipe. My favourite types of apple to use for this is Bramley apples (also called cooking apples) or red apples such as McIntosh or Pink Lady. You can use green eating apples for this recipe but you may need to add a touch more sugar if they are very sour.

Should apple crumble be served hot or cold?

You can eat crumble both hot and cold but I prefer to eat it warm. You can reheat any leftovers in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.

  • Delicious! I would reduce the cinnamon and add a bit more butter for next time but overall very good :)
